This just means talking to you about your difficulties and your life story, before making a plan with you about what care options would be helpful. This will be done by an experienced mental health professional. You can share as much or as little information by email beforehand as you wish.
The assessment can be at our consulting rooms or on-line by video-conference. The first assessment appointment is usually 90 minutes to give you enough time to share what you need to. If after the first appointment we don’t think what we offer will help you, we will say. Usually 3-5 appointments are needed for a psychotherapy assessment. There will be two outcomes from this assessment: an initial psychological understanding of your problems (a ‘formulation’); and a plan for the care options we recommend. A psychiatric assessment, for diagnosis or for a second opinion, is likely to be shorter, usually 1-2 sessions.
